D. Discussion Items
1. Food Rescue Assessment - Maddie Keating (National Resources Defense Council),
Bryan Johnson (City of Madison)
NRDC working with Madison as a Food Matters partner (to reduce food waste, redistribute
recovered food) - final year
Food Rescue Landscape Assessment - stakeholder convening? comprehensive
inventory/map of the city? NRDC example:
$10K: Deliverables would need to be completed by late June - as a contract, or grant to a
nonprofit.
Local partners working on food recovery: Healthy Food for All & FEED Kitchen, Sustain
Dane (grant to work on food waste in schools), Second Harvest Food Bank, prepared
meal sites, Littlejohn’s, Dane Food Access Network.
Sustain Dane Summit conversation - Nov 2022 around food waste.
Assessment can cover Dane County area.
Maddie: we may want to start with what we already know; use the funding for a convening
opportunity instead of an assessment - to help move toward federal funding, sustained
actions.
Bryan, Maddie - would work with interested lead to put the application together. Maddie’s
preference is a grant letter.
2. Dane County Pandemic Food System Study
Final recommendations will wrap up by March 1, followed by presentations
3. 2023 USDA Regional Food System Partnership (RFSP) grant & fundraising
4. USDA grant opportunities; statewide communication & partnerships
5. Farm Bill 2023
E. Announcements
F. Future Meeting Items and Dates
Move to meeting more frequently than monthly;
Farmland Preservation Task Force - meets 2nd & 4th Weds, 3-4:30pm.
Maybe next Food Plan WG meeting on 1st or 3rd Weds in Feb?
Organizing a broader Food Summit to engage more community members; connector
event. REAP, Extension (plus others) want to bring that back. REAP has a grant
application in that includes organizing a food justice summit. Intentionally, actively
outreaching to and including people who may not have been able to engage before.
G. Such Other Business as Allowed by Law
H. Adjourn
A motion was made by KEMBLE, seconded by KAUTH, that the meeting be
adjourned. The motion carried unanimously 3-0.
