D. Presentations  
Dane County Sheriff’s Office Overview  
Barrett presented. Chair Andrae asked about an update on the staffing issues impacting  
the Sheriff’s Office. Barrett reported that the number of vacancies totals approximately  
40. Supervisor Weigand asked how committee members can communicate with the  
Sheriff, and the Sheriff responded by suggesting emails are the best way. Supervisor  
Collins asked about mutual aid, and the Sheriff explained the protocols surrounding  
mutual aid to other law enforcement agencies. Supervisor Gray asked about staffing in  
the diversion program, and Sheriff explained the outstanding staffing needs for the  
program. Supervisor Collins asked the Sheriff about potential new crises that may require  
additional resources, and the Sheriff explained the obstacles surrounding seasonal  
increases in crime, domestic issues, lack of mental health care and fentanyl. Supervisor  
Gray asked about the voluntary nature of the program that relocates residents to other  
jails, and the Sheriff explained the criteria behind their decision to allow certain residents  
to leave Dane County Jail. Chair Andrae asked how multiple agencies work together when  
an event occurs, and the Sheriff described the protocols. Sheriff reported that certain  
municipalities are interested in obtaining Sheriff services. Chair Andrae asked what role  
would the Sheriff’s Office play whenever someone is under a mental health crisis, and the  
Sheriff explained what resources would be necessary, and how the co-responder model  
would work.
