B. Consideration of Minutes
MEDICAL ADVISORY SUBCOMMITTEE MAY 2024 MINUTES
Attachments: May Minutes
The minutes were approved.
C. Discussion Items
DCEMS Protocols
Medical Advisors and DCEMS office discussed Dane County Protocols and plan for the
future. Will get Medical Advisors and DCEMS office group together in about a week and
will update whole group once decision is made.
Danny Sefick will have someone from Meriter NICU come in and discuss infant warming
at the July MAS meeting. NICU team will talk about keeping infants warm during field
deliveries and endorse the “plastic bag” and how it’s used across the world and NICU’s.
Ask to have advice adjusted to practical applicability in-field. Purpose is to address
questions that were brought up at last meeting.
Heat Risk Study
A former EMT from Deforest Windsor Fire/EMS conducted a study in Los Angeles to
gauge the effect on EMS call volume during heat events. He reached out to Dr.
Kronenfeld with the request to replicate that study in Dane County. Request would be to
get data of total number of EMS calls per day to correlate with heat events. Dr. Spigner
supports this and thinks it should be easy to do. Inverse request to see how cold events
also affect EMS calls. Eric Anderson can provide update at next MAS meeting.
D. Presentations
E. Reports to Committee
DCEMS Updates: mentioned previously at MAS an initiative to get rhythm strips from
public access AEDs for use in hospital to determine treatment for the patient. There
have been a couple of really good use cases. Cardiac Arrest Survivor Celebration was
two Saturdays ago and was well attended and good event overall! General survey of what
agencies use for language lines: DGEMS, FREMS, and MFD have own accounts with
language lines and access codes available in the rigs for crews to use. Stoughton and
Cross Plains use Google translate. DGEMS have old intubation tablets set up to also be
able to use video for sign language. Is there an opportunity for county to look into getting
a centralized line for agencies to use. Add to annual survey to get sense of use in a year
and whether or not our office can budget for that.
Dr. Kim – there is a survey out trying to assess how agencies in the county take care of
pediatric patients. This is the first time a survey of it's kind has been sent out widely. Dr.
Kim urges all agencies to complete this survey. Will benefit state as a whole and
individual agencies as well. Survey closes at end of July.
SCRTAC – meeting this Wednesday 6/10 at Verona Fire Station, topic is pelvic trauma.
All services in attendance will get a pelvic binder.
