Minutes of the September 25, 2024 Park Commission  
A motion was made by BROUWER that the Minutes be approved. The motion  
carried by a voice vote 4-0, YGP 1-0.  
Chair Thoresen requested to move the Presentation up on the agenda. There was unanimous consent  
by Park Commission members.  
E. Presentations  
1. Conservation Fund Grant Application from the Driftless Area Land Conservancy for  
the Kernen parcel in the Southwest Grasslands  
Stephanie Judge, the Conservation Director for the Driftless Area Land Conservancy,  
gave an overview of the Driftless Area Land Conservancy's work. The Driftless Area Land  
Conservancy is working to acquire an 80 acre property in the Town of Primrose. If  
acquired, the property will be actively managed for wildlife habitat and public access. The  
Driftless Area Land Conservancy is requesting a Dane County Conservation Fund Grant  
for 50% of the acquisition costs, approximately $460,000.

1. Land and Water Resource Department 2025 Budget Summary  
Laura Hicklin gave an overview of the Land & Water Resources Department 2025  
operating budget changes and 2025 capital budget.

2. Demolition of Former Highway Garage and Salt Storage Building at 2520 County Rd  
B, Stoughton  
2024 RES-177 awards a contract for the demolition of a former Dane County Highway and  
Transportation garage just north of Viking County Park, at the corner of Co Rd N and Co  
Rd B in Stoughton. LWRD is currently discussing a possible land swap with the Highway  
and Transportation for this parcel.  
3. Walking Iron Trail - Great Sauk State Trail Update  
Two resolutions were recently approved related to the Walking Iron Trail: 2024 RES-170  
awards an agreement to MSA Professional Services for Walking Iron Trail construction  
administration services. 2024 RES-176 amends the intergovernmental agreement with  
Sauk County and the Village of Sauk City for trail to reflect updated TAP grant funding  
amounts.  
The first part of the Walking Iron Trail - Great Sauk State Trail project is currently out for  
bid; bids are due November 19, 2024. Sauk City will be approving the construction  
contract for the main Wisconsin River span bridge on November 26, 2024. Dane County  
will enter into a construction contract for the historic railroad bridge (B428E) rehabilitation  
and a small trail segment between the two bridges. We anticipate that Public Works will  
introduce the authorizing resolution on November 21, 2024 with final County Board  
approval December 19, 2024.  
4. International Trail Summit in Madison, April 12-18, 2025  
The International Trail Summit (ITS) is coming to Madison next spring, April 15-17, 2025.  
ITS is a joint event hosted by American Trails and the Professional Trail Builders  
Association. They are expecting over 700 attendees from all over the world.Optional pre  
and post-conference workshops provide technical training in a hands-on small group  
learning setting. Field trips provide opportunity to explore the area’s trails and beauty. The  
conference's off-site day will be held at Babcock County Park.
