1. Broadband Coordinator Updates
Presented by Jaron McCallum
Round 2 of the Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD)
program recently concluded, running from May 8 to May 29. This round was
intended for areas without preliminary winners from Round 1, for new
applicants, or where there were competing applicants in the same area
with no clear winner.
In Dane County, no new applications were submitted during Round 2. This
likely indicates that there is either a preliminary winner already identified or
that there are competing applicants still under consideration-both of which
would be fiber-based proposals. The NTIA (National Telecommunications
and Information Administration) has granted a 90-day extension to the
states and territories participating in the BEAD program. This extension
pushes the program’s deadline to October 26, 2025, allowing the federal
government additional time to implement potential changes to the program.
In response to ongoing delays, Governor Evers, Representative
Ratcliff, and Representative Udell have sent letters to the current
administration urging prompt federal action on the BEAD program to avoid
further delays in distributing funding.
Discussion ensued about Wi-Fi accessibility within anchor institutions in
Dane County.
