B. Consideration of Minutes
MEDICAL ADVISORY SUBCOMMITTEE JUNE 2024 MINUTES
Attachments: June Minutes
The minutes were approved.
C. Discussion Items
EMS Protocols
Meier will have a conversation with Chiefs at the Association meeting next week on steps
going forward.
Infant Warming - Kate Kroes and Megan Christenson
Nurses from Meriter NICU came to discuss their protocols for infant warming following
discussions that were had at MAS about different products available for use. They
covered how infants lose heat, what risks are associated including hypothermia, and how
to prevent heat loss. Using saran wrap or Ziploc bags can be just as effective. Can have
it educated on and immediately put into practice in Dane County. Dane County EMS
could help initiate this program by purchasing these bags and handing out with training.
Narcan Vending Machines - Peterson
Peterson applied for a Narcan vending machine grant and DCEMS was awarded enough
for 2 vending machines. Plan is to put them outside of two ED entrances. Ask is for
hospital reps to reach out to Peterson to know which hospitals have interest.
Dane County Annual Survey Input on Questions
Morency will send out 2023 survey to group and ask for feedback by Friday morning.
Weather Effect on EMS Study
LA County did a study by-station on how heat effects call volume. Dane County can
replicate this study by looking at one weather station's data and a count of calls for the
entire county. LA county saw 15% increase in call volume during significant weather
changes. Dane County study will be at the county level, no individual municipalities
separated. Anderson and Dr. Kronenfeld will continue to work on this.
D. Presentations
E. Reports to Committee
UW Health Trauma team reviews trauma leveling criteria every year. They went live with
most recent updates on July 1st. Main effects on EMS care are: added geriatric-specific
vital sign abnormalities; now have 3 levels of trauma; each level has different number of
ED staff responding to patient. DCEMS – Introduce Andrew Beckett, DCEM’s new
Emergency Communications and Outreach Manager. RTAC – SCRTAC is pushing pelvic
trauma management; purchased SAM pelvic slings, two devices for every ambulance in
region, as well as an additional device for each agency to use for training, and a device +
training device for each hospital. Working on getting those and a training package
distributed. Will be topic of next SCRTAC podcast “SCRTAC Trauma Podcast”. Dr. Kim
– stated pediatric survey at approximately 30% completion rate. Encourage agencies to
complete the survey and reach out if they have any interest in training or assisting with
training videos.
