HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION
Brian Standing gave a presentation on the roles, membership and

REVIEW OF 2024 NOMINATIONS FOR DANE COUNTY HISTORICAL
MARKER PROJECT
The Commission reviewed a presentation, an online timeline and an interactive
map related to the Under Represented Communities Historical Marker project.
Commissioners will review the online materials and provide suggested edits to
staff. By general consensus, the Commission directed staff to:
- revise scoring sheets to reduce the number of categories and simplify ranking
criteria
- provide a draft scoring sheet with staff recommendations of scores for each
submitted nomination
- revise online materials to reflect a permanent, ongoing "crowd-sourced"
community history, rather than "2024 nominations"
The Commission will review nomination rankings at its next meeting and revise
if necessary prior to public hearing on historic marker nominations. Goal is to
select 6 sites from the nominations for permanent, physical markers.
DISCUSS PROPOSAL TO CONDUCT LIDAR ANALYSIS TO IDENTIFY
POSSIBLE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES
Brian Standing presented information about a 2025 collaboration with the
University of Wisconsin to train machine learning tools to scan Dane County
digital elevation models for possible archaeological resources. By general
