C. Action Items
None.
D. Discussion Items
1. West High School Civics Club Voting Initiative Update (Fries)
The resolution was presented to the Executive Committee of the Dane County Board of
Supervisors. The Committee had some suggestions to make the resolution broader for
the support of youth participation in voting including adequate polling stations on college
campuses, looking in to the 30-day residency requirement, and enfranchising 16 and 17
year olds to vote in all elections. Supervisor Fries is tweaking the language to include
these things and to call for a legislative council to officially look into them. The revised
resolution will be reviewed again by the Executive Committee on June 26 and then will be
presented to the full County Board that same day.
2. Duties and Expectations of the Chair (Election in June)
Chair Vella plans to resign. An election for a new Chair will be conducted during the June
meeting.
3. How to Move Forward on 2025 Priority Areas of Guns and School Safety
The Youth Commission will begin looking in more detail at the data gathered on guns and
school safety in the Dane County Youth Assessment (DCYA.)
The body will also talk to young people about other elements of school safety and
possibly recommend some questions around the topic for the 2027 DCYA.
The Youth commission is looking into getting copies of school climate surveys to see
what information they can provide about feelings of safety in schools.
The Youth Commission also wants to look into ways to partner with organizations doing
work in this area such as Focus Intervention and the Public Health Violence Prevention
group.
E. Reports to Committee
None.
F. Future Meeting Items and Dates
Next Meeting: Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
G. Public Comment on Items not on the Agenda
None.
H. Such Other Business as Allowed by Law
The Madison Metropolitan School District sent a youth delegation to the National Youth
Summit. MMSD is also updating its Wellness Policy and recently held a Youth
Restorative Justice Summit. The student senate also put together the first Youth Mental
Health Summit, with the goal of making it an annual event. The Youth Commission would
like to look into how to support that initiative.
