D. Project and General Updates
1 - Dane County “Plant Dane” Tree Program: Wahl piggybacking on the native
herbaceous plant program and DNR Urban Forestry grant to get trees out of the
gravel bed free to public lands such as schools and municipal properties in
small towns. First group of people picked up trees last week. They need to
move about 300 more trees and will repeat in fall as long as they receive free
trees. Recipients must pick up the trees; some are very tall but most are 10’ tall.
2 - Upcoming Events and DCTB Member Commitments: RITT has cycled off
the Tree Board. The Board thanks her for her long years of service! A new
county board supervisor, Colin Barushok has been appointed by the County
Exec. Tree Board members were at EcoLatinos’ event, Party for the Planet and
other events and school districts gave away about 800 heritage oak trees. Alves
has 20,000 tree seedlings donated to him from a Northern IL organization for
Dane County Parks.
3 - School Tree Nursery Program (Matt): Moved Frank Allis School Tree Crib
with OFS to St. Dennis, not doing a planting there till this autumn.
4 - Future Purchases
5 - Future Meeting Location
E. Discussion Items
1 - Tree Board Events: Workforce development event, RICH reached out to
MATC and is awaiting a meeting time to discuss. Goal is to increase more
people in the industry. Possibly June. Or 2027 early spring before high
schoolers finish school for summer or young adults. Or a fall high school event.
Registered Apprenticeship.
2 - Other Tree Board Matters: Urban Forestry position is moving through the
process.
3 - DCTB Application for John C. Bock Foundation
4 - DC Ordinance
F. Action Items
1 - Dane County Tree Board Purchases
2 - Letter of Support for Conservation Program Finder
3 - Authorization for DCTB to Apply for Funding to the John C. Bock Foundation:
DCTB is not applying for the grant.
4 - Other Tree Board Matters: Brodbeck mentioned storm events and insurance
companies requiring people to get rid of trees, even healthy ones or their policy
will be canceled. FRANK gave more details. It is an ethical problem that tree
care companies agree to take out healthy trees. FRANK will forward a letter that
Tree Health Management is using and the DCTB will write a letter/article about
the issue to send out to various media outlets and listservs. Suggestions made
by DCTB to contact Alders, do radio PSAs, send info to the Larry Meiller show
Garden Talk, WORT, county board supervisors, Johnson’s newspaper column,
Johnson’s Extension blog, master gardeners, etc.
3. Motion by RICH, seconded by BOCSI, to write a letter of support for CARPC’s
Bock Foundation grant. MOTION passed (5-0).
