SUGGESTED CHANGES TO CHAPTER 7 COUNTY BOARD RULES
FOR 2022-2024 TERM
The committee continued its discussion of the proposed amendments to Chapter 7 of the
Dane County Ordinances--specifically the proposals made by Supervisor Wegleitner-
-which were not addressed at the previous meeting due to time constraints.
The following members of the public spoke (see 3-24-22 registration report attached with
the 3-24-22 minutes for full account of public registrants, including those who did not
attend or speak).
- Erik Anderson, Town of Primrose, representing self, neither opposing or supporting. Mr.
Anderson also spoke on Chapter 15 of the Ordinances, which was not before the
committee at this meeting.
- Ryan Jayne, Madison, representing The Freedom from Religion Foundation, spoke in
support of the Wegleitner proposals to remove the prayer and pledge of allegiance from
Chapter 7.
- Annie Laurie Gaylor, Madison, representing self, spoke in support of the Wegleitner
proposals to remove the prayer and pledge of allegiance from Chapter 7.
- Supervisor Kiefer spoke in opposition to removal of the reference to prayer and pledge
of allegiance in Chapter 7.
- Supervisor Wegleitner spoke about the violent, threatening, and disrespectful
communications she has received in the wake of her proposals for Chapter 7 and
indicated she would like communication to be more respectful in the future.
Supervisor Chawla thanked Supervisor Wegleitner for her courage.
Committee members discussed each item proposed as an amendment by Sup.
Wegleitner, asked questions, and gave instructions to staff on which amendments to
preserve and which to remove.
A motion was made by ERICKSON, seconded by CHAWLA, to direct staff to
record all accepted amendment proposals from the March 17 and March 24
meetings of the committee and convey the accepted amendments to
Corporation Counsel for drafting of 2022 OA-1, to be late-referred to the
Executive Committee for its April 7 meeting. The motion carried by a voice
vote.
