10.26.2022 MINUTES TREEBOARD POLICY
Attachments: 2022 MIN-417
A motion was made by MODERHOCK, seconded by NOONE, that the Minutes be
approved. The motion carried by a voice vote 3-0.
C. Discussion Items
a. Tree preservation/planting ideas: NOONE asked what section of the Dance County
Parks and Open Space Plan we should concentrate on or do all?
b. Policy ideas next steps discussion: Dane County Parks and Open Space Plan being
revised this winter. Dane County Land and Water Resource Management Plan will be
renewed in 2028 but no revisions are planned. This plan affects about 91,000 acres.
Page 12 of the plan, Woodland Resources shows approximately 91,832 acres, or 11.5%,
of the total land area of the county that is classified as woodlands. The county owns and
manages 187 acres of land designated as “County Forest” land, including Morton Forest
and Scheidegger Forest. Dane County forests have the potential to become excellent
outdoor classrooms for people of all ages to learn about forest ecology, vegetation
management practices, and the wildlife that use these areas.
c. Discussion: Do we want to start future proofing oaks at the 2 forest sites with the
Open Space Plan? Recommend for inclusion specific goals for future proofing and new
land that we acquire. Need another forester position to accomplish these goals; RITT will
pursue funding for this.
d. Wahl input from 5 year plan is great and needs to be reformatted. RITT will work on
that before next meeting. Each member should review and see if anything should be
added.
