1. CHILD-FRIENDLY VISITS AT THE DANE COUNTY JAIL
Presented by Dr. Julie Poehlmann, Dr. Pajarita Charles, Sheriff Kalvin Barrett
Presentation regarding the research, experiences, and needs of children with incarcerated
parents. Child-friendly visits are one way to support families impacted by incarceration.
Child-friendly visits are contact visits with developmentally appropriate activities for

This parenting skills program is evidence-based and uses cognitive behavioral therapy,
and it highlights topics such as recognizing the child’s needs, positive reinforcement,
problem-solving, and coparenting while incarcerated. Participants self-report learning a
great deal in the program, and provide testimonials (see letter in presentation).
Discussion ensues regarding practices to support families impacted by incarceration.
Discussion regarding intergenerational incarceration. Discussion of space constraints
and limitations to participation in the jail. Discussion of alternative locations for visits.
