D. Presentations
1. RSVP Volunteer Services Programs Update
RSVP Director Margie Zutter updated members on the volunteer services currently
provided by RSVP over the past year. Half of the staff is back in the office working, with
others working remotely. Audio and video monthly meetings have been set up so
volunteers can remain engaged. These monthly Zoom meetings have included activities,
lectures on topics of interest and the means to connect with fellow volunteers while
isolated. The success of the Computer Buddy program, expanded to include Cambridge
and DeForest area elementary students, was mentioned as a means for engaging new
volunteers during the pandemic as these volunteers work with students via Zoom since
schools don’t want more volunteers in the classrooms until COVID transmission is not an
issue.
RSVP Groups Project Coordinator Kate Seal talked about projects the volunteers have
been working on. Currently there are 200-250 project volunteers sewing, knitting or
crocheting items that are then donated throughout Dane County. The most requested
items have been hats, mittens, quilts and totes. The group made 6,000 facemasks that
were handed out through the ADRC and Focal Points. Volunteers have been busy
making different quilts for vets, fidget quilts for persons with dementia, and weighted
shawls for Meriter Hospital. Chemo hats for UW Hospital have been a big request as
well. During the summer two groups were able to get together at a local barn and make
over 1,000 bags to be donated.
AAA Aging Specialist Angela Velasquez commented that RSVP volunteers are vital to
the success of many aging services offered throughout Dane County. In fact,
home-delivered meals would have cost the county $366,000 in mileage alone if we did not
have volunteers helping with delivery.
E. Reports to Committee
1. Diversity Work Group
VELASQUEZ noted that the Dane County Office of Equity and Inclusion Director Wesley
Sparkman would be a guest speaker AAA Legislative/Advocacy meeting on December 8,
2021 for the purpose of learning how this office might advise the workgroup as they
pursue additional representation on the AAA Board/Committees.
2. 2022-2024 Dane County Aging Plan
2022-2024 Dane County Aging Plan
Public Hearing Agenda for December 14, 2021
VELASQUEZ reminded members of the Public Hearing on Tuesday December 14, 2021
at 12 pm and encouraged everyone to register to attend.
3. Chair & Staff Reports
MOHAN reported the new COVID variant Omicron is in Milwaukee County. The main
variant continues to be the Delta strain in Dane County and throughout the U.S.
Velasquez updated the Committee on increased annual funding from the Older
American’s Act and the receipt of the American Rescue Plan Act funding to be received
over the next 2 years.
