PUBLIC HEALTH AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION
Attachments: 2022 PRES-008
Presented by Cindy Grady
Review of PowerPoint presentation. Discussion ensues regarding age of those
committing violent offenses and general trends. Public Health uses Uniform Crime
Reporting (UCR) data for classifying violent crimes. Discussion of connecting CJC data
with Public Health and Violence Prevention data, potentially with city data as well.
Discussion of offense classification and how municipal charges will be handled.
Challenges with under-reporting of offenses and verifying whether or not an offense
occurred, particularly with UCR data. This applies to a number of offenses, including
offenses against children. Discussion of differences between NIBRS vs. UCR datasets.
Additional discussion regarding juvenile offenses, justice-involved youth, and diverting
youth who enter the system at a younger age before greater system involvement. More
data will be needed to connect these different populations and issues, and work must be
shared transparently throughout.
