F. Presentations
1. The Friends of Silverwood Park
The Friends of Silverwood Park runs the regenerative agriculture garden program with
grower partners. Volunteers are working on the oak woodland restoration and have done
the initial invasive brush clearing in nearly all of the 50 acre woodland. The Friends host
several educational programs and community events throughout the year, including a
summer camp, wreath making, mushroom log inoculation workshops, harvest festival,
candlelight hike and Natural Resource Foundation field trips. The harvest festival is
coming up on Saturday, September 17 from 11 AM - 4 PM. Summer camp students Ellie
and Jane Cunningham spoke about their favorite parts of summer camp and their
volunteer work in the park.
2. History of Silverwood County Park
The property was donated to Dane County in 2001 by Irene Silverwood after it had been in
the Silverwood family since 1870. Pursuant to the wishes of Mrs. Silverwood, the Park
was leased out for agricultural production for the first several years of County ownership
and therefore park planning and development did not begin until 2013. The park's master
plan was completed in 2016. The Silverwood Stone House, previously the Silverwood
family home, was built pre-Civil War of locally quarried limestone. We do not know the
exact date the house was constructed but it is thought to have been built in the late
1840’s to mid-1850’s based on the style of the house and marks left on the wood during
construction. The house was renovated by Operation Fresh Start in 2016 for use as a
visitor’s center. The park has over 5,000 feet of shoreline along Rice and Sweet Lakes,
which are popular for paddlers. The park also has hiking and equestrian trails.
3. Groundswell Conservancy, Town of Dunkirk and Dunkirk Dam Lake District,
Conservation Fund Grant Application – Yahara River
The Town of Dunkirk, Dunkirk Dam Lake District and Groundswell Conservancy are
partnering to purchase a 1.64 acre parcel on the Yahara River off of County Highway N.
They have applied for a Conservation Fund Grant for $19,500. The property will provide
public access and increase water recreation opportunities on the river. The Town of
Dunkirk will own the property and the Dunkirk Dam Lake District will construct the
improvements and manage the property.
