C. Action Items
1. Advocacy Supporting Federal & State Programs
MCHONE reported Legislation is in recess at this time.
D. Presentations
None.
E. Reports to Committee
1. Diversity Work Group
Cleveland James was present from the work group. They are trying to bring another
person on board to help with recruitment. JAMES had a few questions for committee
members concerning what information can the work group share outside of the
recruitment they do, can the work group bring any concerns to the committee and how is
it decided who gets food/meals. A major concern JAMES brought up was the changing
bus routes by Madison Metro starting January 1, 2023. He has been hearing many
concerns from older adults and disabled citizens of how their transportation is being
taken away from them. The majority of the committee members did not have a chance
to advocate for the changes that have already been finalized. These conversations have
been taking place at the Specialized Transportation Commission. This was another
example of why the Diversity Work Group and other such concerns should be with the
AAA Board as the minutes are shared with the AAA Board from other committees and
commissions.
2. Wisconsin Senior Advocates
MCHONE stated that voting education to older adults is top priority. The stop and go
light flyer from last month was shared again. The flyer will be going out to older adults to
help them understand voting and knowing the issues.
3. ADRC Governing Board
Adult transition was discussed. No aging topics discussed.
4. County/State/Federal Legislative Update
Dane County Lobbyist Carrie Springer reported the Inflation Reduction Act passed. This
will help older adults by capping out of pocket expenses on medication. Insurance
companies can negotiate drug prices for Medicare. Insulin would have a $35 a month
cap and free vaccines for 2023. ACA “Obamacare” carried forward three more years.
This helps by keeping more people on health care. PACT ACT was passed on the
Federal level. This provides additional coverage for vets exposed to burn pits/burn duty.
5. State's Aging Advisory Council
MCHONE reported a steering committee formed and hired a volunteer coordinator.
6. Wisconsin Aging Advocacy Network
MCHONE reported core members attended a retreat at Fitchburg Senior Center. First
time the group has been able to meet in person since COVID. Members were broke out
into small groups to discuss advocacy and mission statement. Currently an opening for
Chair of WAAN. Problem solving for accountability of core members when they leave as
this puts more work on Janet. Group came up with four subgroups: Mission Statement,
Advocacy for older adults, Coalition, and creating a Leadership Model. Talked about
creating wards so everyone is covered in the state. Long discussion about working more
with older adults instead of working for them. Not pushing each organization but what
resources are available.
7. Chair & Staff Reports
AAA Manager Sridevi Mohan shared that the Dane County Human Services budget report
might be released by September 26, 2022. Hopefully our budget priorities are included in
the budget. MCHONE asked when the County Board was meeting about the budget
items. AAA Clerk Cindy Matulle advised the budget meetings will be September 14 &
21, 2022.
F. Future Meeting Items and Dates
