E. Reports to Committee
Supervisors Erickson and Castillo talked about how the County's resolution on an
external investigation into the zoo was passed by the full County Board. $50k has been
appropriated and a report will be completed no later than Oct 1, 2022. Supervisor Castillo
will keep the Board appraised of the action being taken.
Schwetz went over the OEI internal investigation findings and the zoo's work plan to
address the suggested improvements. Discussion ensued.
Schwetz and Petersen went over the animal welfare concerns listed in WSJ article. The
zoo's animal care team makes a risk assessment before any course of action is taken
on any animal. After any animal incident, animal care staff and management go over what
happened and review protocols to make sure that everything was done correctly and
adjustments can be made.
Commission decided to continue this discussion at the next meeting.
